Mounting Subrack Rails

We offer 2 solutions for those wishing to construct their own enclosures
with the minimum of metal sub-rack parts.

The first solution uses just our rails and tapped strips. It is important with this approach that the rails are held securely in place and to assist with this our rails have 2 x M5 tapped holes at each end. Using both screws eliminates the tendency for the rails to try and rotate around a single bolt as offered in some competitor products.

The rails will, of course, need to be secured in to your enclosure. Any M5 threaded bolt will work fine, you need to ensure that there is at least 5mm of bolt secured in the rail with a maximum depth of penetration of around 14mm. We currently offer fixing hardware in the form of M5 socket head bolts, M5 countersunk bolts and M5 washers. The choice of which to use will be dictated by the material you use for the case and it's thickness. Suggestions are include in the sub-rack DIY details which also includes dimensional details for installation of your rails.

The second solution uses a Filler Ear. This Ear is similar to our standard 3U Ears but has had the `ear' or `wing' reduced to 2mm. This depth is sufficent to `hide' the heads of our rail fixing bolts with the minimal increase in the overal width of the sub-rack.

These Ears, in conjunction with a Side panel Spacer allow the rails to be assembled in to a rigid structure which can then be slid in to your case. The Side Panel Spacer has a 4.2mm hole which is then used to secure the assembly to your case from the inside thus leaving the outer surface of your case free from fixing bolts. The Filler Ear provides a nice clean `front' to your system by providing a 2mm front edge at the sides of your rack which hides all fixing bolts used to assemble to the sub-rack.

The Side Panel Spacers are 58mm deep and defines the minimum depth of your rack.

Filler Ears are offered in 3U, 6U and 9U sizes and, like our standard Side Panels provide the essential support and correct rail-to-rail spacing for the perfect custom sub-rack.
